Interpersonal Therapy Melbourne

What is Interpersonal Therapy?

IPT is based on the idea that we become unhappy, stressed and worried when our relationships are under strain, disrupted, or when we lose an important relationship. This therapy focuses on understanding your relationship patterns, improving important relationships, plus feeling more peaceful and adjusted to ongoing relationship issues. In sessions, your psychologist and you may talk through events and patterns in relationships; help you understand and resolve the feelings you have in relationships; teach new communication and relationship skills.

The aim is to improve your relationships or develop healthy relationships, so you feel calmer and more satisfied. It is also useful for overcoming losses, disappointments and long-term relationship issues. IPT is focussed on your specific goals and the relationships important to you. It may feel more ‘non-directive’ than a therapy like CBT – that means more like having a good conversation. But it can involve learning communication skills and relationship skills too.

What Is IPT Used To Treat?

IPT has been shown by research to be effective for:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Chronic health conditions
  • Pain and health related issues
  • Postnatal depression and anxiety

Director & Consultant Clinical Psychologist
Endorsed In Clinical Psychology And Board-Approved Supervisor
B.B.Sc. (Hons). D. Psych (Clinical). MACPA.

For 23 years I have been  working with people of all ages to help them improve their psychological health. I originally trained as a Child and Adolescent Clinical Psychologist, and still love helping children, young people and their parents.

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to work in a wide range of excellent services. I’ve worked in Public Mental Health, Secondary Schools, Hospitals, Community Health, and Learning Difficulties Services in both Australia and the UK.

I began supervising Psychologists, Registrar Psychiatrists and other Allied Health Practitioners in 2004. I very much enjoy training and supervising, and am pleased to still be doing this in Private Practice.
I work flexibly with a strong connection to my clients, to help them improve their mental health, well-being, relationships and lives. I enjoy enabling people to be happier and calmer; to meet their goals in life and achieve more; to learn and develop better; and to have better relationships. I work with:

  • Children (4yrs +)
  • Adolescents
  • Young Adults
  • Parents with depression, anxiety adjustment and stress, parenting/carer issues, family issues, separation and divorce
  • OCD in children, adolescents
  • Anxiety in children, adolescents
  • Phobias
  • Health-related issues, including Chronic Illness and Somatic issues (medically unexplained symptoms)
  • Parenting and family management
  • Bereavement, loss and separation

I love providing formal assessments of neurodevelopmental and learning disorders, such as ADHD, Autism, and Specific Learning Disorders. Assisting clients with these conditions and their parents is a passion of mine.
I focus on helping people using scientifically proven therapies including Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness, Narrative and Solution-Focused Therapies.

I am endorsed by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (APHRA) as a Clinical Psychologist and an Endorsed Supervisor of other Psychologists. I am also a member of the Australian Clinical Psychologists Association.
